금단의 숲 2009-2013

섬에 숲이 생겼을 때 일이다.

아주 오래전 세상을 지배하던 산의 기운은 불로 화하여 천지를 뒤덮고 마침내 인간의 영역마저 위협하기에 이르렀다. 물의 기운을 품은 숲의 영험함으로 자연에 균형을 부여하지 않으면 마을 전체가 화를 면하기 어려울 것이라는 계시를 받들어 인간들은 마을에서 가장 신성한 터에 돌을 쌓고 흙을 옮겨와 나무를 심기 시작하였다. 그렇게 나무들은 자라나 숲을 이루었고 사람들의 마음속에 굳게 각인되었다. 이제 그 곳은 세상 그 무엇으로도 깨뜨릴 수 없는 신의 언어로 봉인되었다. 바람이 숲을 흔들고 있다. 빛은 바람을 가르고 한참을 달려간 후에야 멈춘다. 기나긴 지움의 과정 끝에, 찰나의 순간 어둠이 쏟아진다. 짙은 울렁거림은 블랙홀처럼 세상을 빨아들이고 토해 내기를 수십번, 비로소 숲은 켜켜이 쌓인 표면 너머의 세계를 열어 보여주었다. 한참동안 나의 시선을 교란시키며 망막속에 깊은 자욱을 남기더니 끝내 부서지는 빛이 되어 사라져간다. 눈을 감는다. 지워진 것들과 불리워졌던 것들, 숨소리를 거두어들인 것들, 돌, 바람, 흙, 빛, 소리, 나무 그리고 사람. 숲의 거친 호흡이 잦아들 때쯤이면 우리도 지워질 존재에 불과하다. 영원불멸의 견고함을 꿈꾸었기 때문이다.

최근 작 '금단의 숲-Forbidden Forest' 프로젝트는 급속한 근대화 과정과 개발의 논리에 의해 폐기되었던 삶의 근원적 요소들과 우주의 원리를 환기시킨다. 사진의 무대가 되고 있는 성스러운 숲은 자연에서 신과 인간이 서로 조화롭게 공존할 수 있는 교감의 장이며, 그렇게 인간들의 손길과 정성으로 만들어졌다. 그러함으로 긴 시간이 흐른 지금도 이 곳은 인간들이 지켜나가야 할 마지막 성역이기도 하다. 신화와 전설이 깃든 숲은 민간, 토속, 기복신앙의 영향으로 여전히 금기와 신성한 영역 안에 위치한다. 신화의 시대, 숲과 인간 사이에 놓인 영적 경계는 역설적으로 자연과 인간사이의 친화력을 더욱 강화시켰고 인간과 자연이 조화로운 관계 속에 공존할 수 있도록 하였다. 이번 '금단의 숲' 프로젝트는 '전설'과 '신화'의 이미지를 부활시키려는 시도이다. 또한 이 숲은 현대 도시산업화의 과정으로 잃어버린 우리의 미적, 감각적 정체성을 복원시키기 위한 죽음과 생성의 공간이기도 하다. 숲의 신성함은 하찮은 것들에 부여된 영혼의 누적에서 기인한다. 이성적 판단과 확신을 보류 할 때 숲은 비로소 인식의 틀 너머의 세계, 그 안쪽을 비춰준다. 숲은, 바라볼 수 있는 곳보다 더 먼 곳에 있다.

'금단의 숲-Forbidden Forest'는 Tenseless(텐슬리스) 시리즈의 4번째 프로젝트에 해당한다. 집중성과 긴장감을 뜻하는 'tense'과 없음을 나타내는 'less'의 조합으로 이루어진 Tenselss-텐슬리스의 의미처럼 현실의 시공간을 다층적인 영역으로 설정하여 사진 찍혀진 대상의 가시적(actuality) 측면보다는 택스트로 분화되기 이전의 잠재적(potentiality) 층위에 대해 주목한다. 이 접근방식으로 지난 8년여 동안 일관되게 진행해 온 무제Untitled, 텐슬리스Tenseless 그리고 항해A voyage시리즈를 통해서 '주관적 현실 이해 방식'과 '자연과 인간의 관계성' 이라는 기본 토대로 드러나게 되었다. '금단의 숲' 프로젝트는 미지의 세계를 향한 여행의 귀착점이다. 시작도 끝도 없는 혼돈 속에서 길을 만들다 지우는 과정의 고단함을 이겨내고 나를 움직이게 하던 무형의 기운에 대한 해답이기도 하다. 숲이라는 공간보다는 시간의 선분 위를 떠돌았던 영혼과 기억의 성소이며 안식처이다.

Forbidden forest 2009-2013

It is a story when a forest was established on the island.

The spirit of the mountain, which had dominated the world a very long time ago, transformed into fire, covering the sky and earth with fire and ultimately threatening the territory of humans. People started stacking up stones and planting trees with soil in the most sacred site, in response to a divine sign that the whole village would not avoid wrath if they do not strike a balance in nature through the mysterious energy of the forest that embraces the spirit of water. In this way, the trees grew up, making up a forest and getting imprinted deep in people's minds. The place has now been sealed with God's language that cannot be broken with anything in the world.

The wind shakes the forest. Light stops after it runs for a while, penetrating through the wind.

Darkness pours down an instant - at the end of the long process of erasing. The deep nausea sucks in and out the world tens of times like the Black Hole. Finally, the forest shows another world beyond the multi-layered surface, which disturbs my sight for a long time, leaves a deep mark on the retina, and disappears like a broken light in the end. I close my eyes. Erased things and once-called things, things that no longer breathe, stones, wind, soil, light, sound, trees and people. When the wild breath of the forest fades away, we are nothing but beings to be erased. Because we dream of a solid eternity.

The latest project 'Forbidden Forest' reminds us of the fundamental factors of life and principles of the universe, which were abandoned because of rapid modernization and development. The sacred forest - the stage for photographs - is a place for rapport where Mother Nature and humans can coexist in harmony, which was created by people with efforts and care. In this regard, even now after a long time passed, it is also the last sanctuary that people should keep. The forest, embracing myths and legends, is still located within a holy, prohibited territory under the influence of folklore, folk customs and shamanic beliefs. In the mythical era, the spiritual boundary between man and forest paradoxically strengthened the ties between man and nature, making people live in harmony with nature. This 'Forbidden Forest' project is an attempt to restore the images of 'legends' and 'myths.' In addition, the forest is a place of death and creation to recover our aesthetic and emotional identity which was lost during modern industrialization and urbanization. The sacredness of the forest comes from the accumulation of the souls that were given to trifle things. The forest does not mirror the inside of the world beyond the boundaries of perception until rational judgment and belief is shelved. The forest is located farther than we can see.

'Forbidden Forest' is the fourth series of 'Tenseless.' Like the meaning of 'tenseless' - a combination of 'tense' (concentration and tension) and '-less' (without), the basic foundation of 'understanding of subjective reality' and 'relationship between man and nature' is revealed through 'Untitled,' 'Tenseless' and 'A Voyage' series that have presented for the past eight years in an instinctive approach involving potential layers before diverging into texts, instead of the actual aspect of objects in the photographs that were taken by setting time and space in reality as a multi-layered territory. The project is the destination of a journey into an uncharted world. It is also an answer to the intangible energy that encouraged me to undergo the hard work of creating and erasing a path in chaos with no beginning or no end, and made me keep going. It is a sanctuary and shelter for souls and memories wandering beyond time, other than a forest.
